The Healing Power of Sound

What if you discovered that sound was effective for boosting your immune system, treating chronic pain, speeding recovery from injury, improving circulation, unblocking chakras and reducing stress, would you want to (literally) hear more? More than just a top wellness trend, sound healing therapy is deeply rooted in science and based on the principles of quantum physics and sacred geometry. It has been practiced since ancient times to realign the body’s vibration, improve mental health and emotional wellbeing. Some of the earliest details of using sound to promote healing and wellbeing include indigenous Australians who 40,000 years ago used didgeridoos in healing rituals. The ancient Egyptians also used sound healing, with pyramids designed to create sound chambers. From Tibetan singing bowls, shamanic drums, and vocal chanting, to gongs, chimes and bells, there’s a form of sound healing that can be found in every culture worldwide throughout history.

Everything in the universe – including our bodies – has a vibrational frequency. When our bodies are out of balance, parts are unable to vibrate at their healthiest frequency, causing illness and dis-ease. Sending sound waves throughout your body brings harmony through oscillation and resonance. The vibrations interact with every cell in your body. The tones and frequencies produced by instruments during a sound bath interact with your cells to create therapeutic results and encourage healing by clearing discordance from your energy fields.

What is a sound bath?

A sound bath is a meditative experience and healing practice where you are “bathed” in highly resonant, immersive sound waves to balance your physical, emotional and mental systems, and restore a sense of harmony.

Sound healing benefits

The benefits of sound baths include:

  • Deepening relaxation

  • Lowering stress and anxiety

  • Boosting mood and well-being

  • Improving sleep

  • Heightening focus and energy

  • Promoting a feeling of rejuvenation

Although these are common benefits, different people react to sound baths in different ways. For example, one person might feel especially relaxed, while another might feel invigorated and a boost of energy. Sound healing therapy may be particularly beneficial to someone who has a difficult time with traditional meditation or yoga, yet still yearns to experience similar benefits.

What you can expect during a sound bath

A sound healing session is a unique and deeply immersive experience that can’t really be compared to other therapies in how it plays out. Sound baths are full-body listening events usually experienced either lying down or sitting comfortably. After a few minutes of guided focus on the breath, participants remain quiet and relaxed to allow the different sounds and frequencies to take effect. It is an opportunity to unplug from external stimuli, relax, meditate and let the sound vibrations do their magic, even inviting you into a deeper state of consciousness. Instruments you may hear in sound therapy baths can include the following:

Crystal Singing Bowls

Made of pure quartz, crystal singing bowls come in a variety of colors and sizes and are “programmed” to create specific sounds that resonate with our bodies. The body has a natural affinity to quartz. Every cell in the human body has a geometric crystalline structure and on a molecular level, our cells contain silica which balances our electromagnetic energies. Crystal acts as an oscillator, magnifying and transmitting pure tone. Crystal singing bowls are powerful tools that can help heal mental and physical ailments and rebalance your body to optimal health by transmitting energy that directly affects brain wave activity and supports an improved state of consciousness.

Ocean Drum

The ocean drum recreates the soothing sounds of both rolling and crashing waves. An incredibly versatile instrument, the ocean drum perfectly mimics the sound of the sea waves by slowly tipping the percussion instrument from side to side to produce perfect sound variations. It is ideal for relaxation, meditation and therapy sessions because, through the primordial sound of the waves and the surf, it relieves stress and calms the mind as well as the soul.

Gong

Gong therapy encourages greater overall stillness and contentment. Gongs have been used as shamanic healing tools for thousands of years, and are an influential part of sound healing. The sound of a gong helps the brain reach deep relaxation. The vibrations produced in a gong bath help to “tune” your body, aiding in restoring harmony and resonance throughout. Gong baths are highly rejuvenating and bring about an overall sense of relaxation, which can reduce stress as well as help develop a better ability to cope with stress, help remove emotional blockages from trauma, and even stimulate altered states of consciousness.
